Boland Athletics Polevault Academy

The Founder

Louis Nienaber, the founder, is a pole-vault enthusiast.

This dedication, combined with his love of coaching, is both inspiring and life- changing for individuals who are part of the academy. This sport has had a huge impact on his life; thus, he has been prepared to put in the time and effort to stand on the track every day for the past 42 years. He established the pole-vault academy in 2004. He has also acquired the appropriate equipment for the activity over the years.

The Coaches

Louis Nienaber and Jean-Paul van As are the head

coaches.

Louis Nienaber oversees the three Paarl facilities. He is a living legend. He not only coaches pole-vault but also teaches young athletes life skills via exercise and hard work. He understands the intricacies of the sport because he was a pole-vaulter himself, and he has been sharing his expertise and experience since 1980. He has coached various national athletes over the years, notably Okkert Brits as a school boy (Olympian who eventually jumped 6.03m), Kyle Rademeyer (who still holds the South African and African Junior Men’s Record), Nikolai van Huyssteen (5th place at Youth Olympic Games), Valco van Wyk (silver medallist at African Championships) and Nicole Janse van Rensburg (bronze medallist at African Championships). Jean-Paul van As is in charge of the Stellenbosch facility. He has been coaching pole- vault since 2009 when he joined the academy. He was also a pole-vaulter who leaped 5 meters high and still competes in master’s athletics today. He is a devoted coach who has a love for the sport. He is actively involved in the training of his athletes and nothing is ever too much effort for him. Miré Reinstorf, the current World Junior Women’s Champion and African Champion, who also owns the South African and African Junior Women’s records, has trained under the watchful eye of Jean-Paul, which in itself speaks of his dedication.
